01 / What it is
Methanation Catalysts
Methanation converts carbon oxides with hydrogen to methane and water. In ammonia and hydrogen process trains it is commonly used as a final purification step before downstream use of the hydrogen-rich gas.
02 / Where it is used
Application areas
- Final carbon-oxide removal in ammonia synthesis-gas preparation
- Hydrogen purification duties
- Selected syngas polishing applications
03 / Application context
The operating system matters.
Because methanation is exothermic, the inlet contaminant load and distribution matter. Shift performance, carbon-dioxide removal, water management and startup practice should be reviewed together with the methanator bed.
04 / Selection considerations
Inputs that shape evaluation
| Parameter | Why it matters | Typical evaluation input |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon oxide load | CO and CO₂ determine reaction duty and temperature rise. | Normal and upset inlet analyses |
| Outlet target | Downstream equipment sets the required residual level. | Product specification and analyser history |
| Temperature control | Inlet temperature and exotherm affect activity and integrity. | Bed temperature profile |
| Upstream carryover | Solvent, sulfur or water can affect catalyst condition. | Known carryover events and guard systems |
| Mechanical condition | Pressure drop and loading quality support reliable flow. | Bed geometry and differential pressure |
