01 / What it is
External Electron Donors
An external electron donor is introduced separately from the catalyst and co-catalyst in selected polypropylene processes. Its effect is process- and catalyst-dependent, so a donor should not be substituted from name or general chemistry alone.
02 / Where it is used
Application areas
- Stereoregularity and isotacticity control
- Catalyst selectivity management
- Grade transition strategy
- Polymer property adjustment within qualified operating practice
03 / Application context
The operating system matters.
The useful question is not which donor is strongest in isolation, but which donor behaviour fits the catalyst, TEAL ratio, process technology and targeted resin properties. Trials require agreed evaluation criteria and controlled change management.
04 / Selection considerations
Inputs that shape evaluation
| Parameter | Why it matters | Typical evaluation input |
|---|---|---|
| Catalyst pairing | Donor response depends on the catalyst system. | Catalyst identity and supplier guidance |
| Target properties | The required balance differs by grade. | Isotacticity, melt-flow and end-use requirements |
| Hydrogen interaction | Response may shift with donor and process conditions. | Hydrogen practice and observed response |
| Dosing control | Repeatable addition supports consistent operation. | Metering method, ratio and variability |
| Change management | Substitution requires a controlled qualification plan. | Trial criteria, sampling and approval process |
