Gas Treatment / Technical note

Key Factors Affecting MDEA Gas-Treating Performance

Why feed gas, solvent health, circulation, regeneration and mechanical condition need to be reviewed together.

When an MDEA unit misses treated-gas specification, fresh solvent concentration is only one possible factor. A useful investigation reviews the full absorber–regenerator system and the condition of the circulating inventory.

01 / Evaluation point

Define the real acid-gas duty

Use normal and limiting feed analyses, flow rate and treated-gas requirements. Average composition alone can hide peaks that set absorber or regenerator duty.

02 / Evaluation point

Check the circulating solvent

Review concentration, loading, degradation products, heat-stable salts, solids, hydrocarbons and corrosion indicators. Sampling location and laboratory method should be documented.

03 / Evaluation point

Review hydraulics and heat balance

Circulation, contactor condition, filtration and regeneration temperatures can limit performance even when solvent chemistry is acceptable.
