Activated Carbon Selection for Industrial Gas Purification

A selection method based on contaminant speciation, stream conditions, bed hydraulics and safe change-out.

Activated carbon is a family of adsorbents, not one interchangeable material. Effective selection begins with the molecule to remove and the process conditions under which adsorption must occur.

01 / Evaluation point

Characterize more than the target

Identify the target concentration and outlet limit, then document humidity, temperature, pressure and competing compounds. These factors can change effective capacity and breakthrough shape.

02 / Evaluation point

Fit the carbon to the equipment

Particle size, strength and form influence pressure drop, dust and flow distribution. Existing vessel dimensions and velocity therefore belong in the media evaluation.

03 / Evaluation point

Plan for the full lifecycle

Monitoring, breakthrough criteria, safe unloading and spent-media disposition should be defined before the first fill rather than at the end of service.
